I first participated in On Your Feet Friday two summers ago, soon after the event came into existence. The idea sounded intriguing — run, jog or walk through downtown; visit established checkpoints to collect stamps on a passport; and earn raffle tickets for prizes based on how many checkpoints you reached.
I love scavenger hunts, and although I am an occasional runner, I’m not often motivated to exercise. The event, hosted by Gallagher Fitness Resources, was a good way to get moving, learn about local businesses (several of the sites on the passport were ones I’d never visited before), and win free stuff. Plus, it was fun to see so many other runners on the streets of downtown, racing from spot to spot.
Now in its third year, On Your Feet Friday draws several hundred people each month. After the running portion, there’s an after-party that includes numerous raffle prizes, food and beer. The event is free, but proceeds from food and beer sales go to support Friends of Two Bridges, a nonprofit building community support for the design and construction of the Minto Island Bridge and connecting pathways.
Last month, I strapped a portable, wide-angle camera to my jogging stroller to capture a runner’s-eye view of the event. The resulting video is below — maybe it will inspire you to get on your feet.
